9 killed at two nightclubs in Germany

A gunman suspected of killing nine people in two shisha bars in Germany is thought to have a far-right background, prosecutors said Thursday, sparking outrage across the world as it deals with the rise of extreme right-wing. The attack took place at multiple locations in the city of Hanau, near Frankfurt on Wednesday night. Federal prosecutors view the mass shooting — one of Germany’s worst in years — as a terrorist act. Authorities believe the perpetrator, 43, has returned home and shot himself after the attack. He was found dead in his flat early Thursday along with his 72-year-old mother’s body. According to the regional interior minister Peter Beuth, both died from gunshot wounds. Chancellor Angela Merkel said the perpetrator seemed to have acted out of “extremist, racist right-wing motivations” and described hate as a poison in German society. Prosecutors said the suspect had no criminal record but posted online conspiracy theories about xenophobia. Shooting spree at shisha bars The rampage started at about 10 p.m. And seems to be centering around two shisha bars in the city’s immigrant neighborhoods. Since opening fire at the shisha bar at midnight, the perpetrator then fled by car to the Arena Bar it Cafe where the assault was continuing. Shisha bars, or flavored tobacco bars, started first in the Turkish community of the city, and have become popular among young German people in recent years. Kadir Koester, a 38-year-old businessman who operates a bar across from one of the targeted bars, said he heard shots fired. “There was a man lying on the sidewalk, shot in the head, I guess. My neighbor said ‘ get down. ‘ The police came quick,” Reuters told him. Can-Luca Frisenna, whose family members are running one of the bars under assault, said after learning of the shooting, he rushed to the scene. “I heard my father and my little brother were affected, they are running the kiosk,” Frisenna told Reuters. “They’ve been terrified and they’ve been weeping and they’ve been crying, and everything. Turkey called the…

14 Of the dozens of children killed in the attack in Cameroon, the UN says

Of 22 people killed by armed men in the English-speaking region of Cameroon, at least 14 children were killed, a United Nations official said.  James Nunan of the United Nations said the attack happened on Friday in Ntumbo, a village in northwestern Cameroon. Details of Sunday’s violence emerged. Nunan told CNN an unspecified number of residents, including a pregnant woman, had been injured. He added that since that time at least 600 villagers have fled the area. Rignyu Solange, who comes from Ntumbo, said that nine members of her family were killed when many houses in the village were burned down by security forces searching for separatists. “My sister and her family were killed as the military torched houses in their sleep because they thought the separatist rebels were hiding in the village. I want harshly punishing the perpetrators of this crime,” Solange told CNN. The death toll from Friday’s attack has risen to 32, Cameroonian activist and human rights lawyer Felix Agbor Nkongho told CNN Monday. “There has to be brought to justice the military officers responsible for these heinous crimes,” he said. Cameroon army spokesman Atonfack Guemo denied the estimates, claiming that only one woman and four children were killed during the attack in a crossfire between the security forces and the separatists. He said the separatist fighters in the area were engaged by a team of six soldiers killing seven of them. He added the fighting continued into the night and bullets hit fuel containers exploded, causing a blaze to spread through buildings. “This caused the death of five people; a woman and four children, contrary to reports on social media,” he said. Separatists in Cameroon’s English-speaking regions have struggled for several years with government forces and government-backed militias. All sides are accused of violence…
