Iranian women’s first football match in decades

This is the first time in decades that Iranian women are allowed to watch a men’s sport. The match was a World Cup qualifier in Tehran.

Iranian women have been banned to watch men’s sport since the 1979 Islamic revolution. The women were allowed because of a fan who set herself on fire when police arrested her at a stadium she wasn’t allowed to enter.

In Thursday’s match, more than 3,500 women bought tickets for the Worl Cup qualifier to watch it in the stadium in Tehran which has a capacity of about 78,000 people.
